I started this blog today.  I am currently training for  two 5k races - one July 4th and one August 8th.  I really want to break 22 minutes, so I am reevaluating my training, and nutrition.  My problem has been inconsistency.  Also I believe too much speed work, without enough aerobic base, although I ran approximately 30 to 40 miles a week all winter. I suffered a knee injury right before I began anaerobic training which had me out for 2 weeks (chondromalacia).  This re-occurring problem is currently in remission due to a painstaking regimen of ice, advil, and stretching.  This first year back to running since high school is sort of an experiment for me in terms of what works and what doesn't work with my training, but I am committed to improvement every step of the way.  I just know I have what it takes to break 20 minutes one day.

Wasn't mentally in the game today, due to my fiancee's near drowning experience on the lake yesterday.  That type of panic, mixed with a poor diet and no sleep = the exact opposite of my recipe for 5k success.  Usually I am disappointed about a bad race for a few days but today I just felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude that Ryan is alive (in the hospital).  Happy 4th!

Oh my gosh! What happened? I almost drowned the other day, but didn't end up in the hospital or anything. Anyway, you ran, and you'll do better next time!

Well, he got caught in a storm canoeing on Lake Erie and fell out about 3 miles from shore. Had nothing but a tiny piece of rubber to float with, and a jet-skier found him 5 hours after the coast guard found his empty canoe. He's out of the hospital now! How did you almost drown?

2 mile warm up, 200 and 1000 meter time trials with 5 minutes rest in between.  Tried to time using my less than functional ipod, so I'm approximating 32 seconds and 3:40,  Not impressed.  I know my legs aren't recovered from Wednesday's race yet though, they just didn't have and couldn't get that springy feel.  I was just gonna go an easy 5 today but I saw that workout for the day in my Lydiard book and it just seemed so much more appealing.  And now I can slip back into my normal weekly routine despite the interruption of a Wednesday race.

Need to muster up some motivation for my race next Wednesday.  Been so preoccupied with Wedding planning, my new job, the nursing board, house repairs...  Stop. Just stop. No excuses. Everyone has shit to do.  Suck it up and do it.  Maybe this "restful" couple of weeks will actually end up benefitting me, because overtraining is my usual downfall.  Say it aloud now:  Im still gonna peak at "Mastick".  I know the course, and as of this writing, Im going to renew my focus on this race.  Where I first came out of my sebattical (sp?) in 2008.  Where exactly 2 years ago my fiancee (for 9 more days!!!!!) told me he loved me for the very first time... Where I still had the respect of my ex nursing supervisor...  So many memories! but it's time to make a new one.  22:30 is the goal.  Time to make that into a reality.

record distance for me so far!  ran to french creek, tried to run the loop but it was too dark, turned around, ran to days dam, and back home. felt surprisingly pretty damn good.  legs didnt start to REALLY feel lousy till the last 3 miles.  And its not like i was close to hitting the wall. i think i could do another 8.2!

Felt surprisingly strong today.  Usually my legs are super stiff for a few days after super long runs, and since yesterday was my longest ever to date I expected the worse.  However I was pleasantly surprised to find I could have gone even further/faster.  I feel as tho I have surpassed a certain physical barrier. Definitely a confidence booster!

R foot sore. Booo!  Been sore for about a week but really lingered afterwards today.  Iced it in the creek after the run.  Still a little tender.  Its hard to tell whether or not to attribute it to the new shoes.  Maybe i should just take a few days off.   But how many is enough?  I hate the guess work of being a self diagnostician, but im certainly not gonna pay for a damn xray with no insurance.

I can't believe i took 3 days off.  iced and adviled.  im thinking it may have been peritoneal tendonitis rather than a stress fracture, in which i should probably take it easy, but i just cant stand injuries.  Its like taking my drug away, and im going thru running withdrawals and me and everyone around me has to suffer.  gonna try a 5 mile in my old shoes. we will see. 

 

Had a slight dull ache. no actual pain. began approx a mile and a half out, but didnt really get  any worse, in fact i probably wouldve forgotten about it if i hadnt been so tuned into it the entire time, observing it. nontheless, im currently icing it.  i will probably refrain from the advil regimen, i hate taking pills. perhaps will buy some tape to compress later on to get a nice blood flow going into those tendons.  running is directly correlated with my sanity and my sobriety so i am praying that this will pass quickly

Planned to run 20 this morning since im off but i had such an awful sleep plagued with awful dreams, got a late start, thought about letting ryan use my car and doing the 20 anyways but thinking about the possibilities was ruining my run so i cut it short, no regrets. i didnt feel so great anyways, so i will attempt tomorrow morning instead. no foot pain

Ok.  I know I say this so incredibly often and never follow through, but i really want to maintain my focus and get into marathon shape.  Life is never going to be without distractions and work and family obligations, but there's no more room for excuses.  If i want to achieve this goal, I am going to have to commit 100% and stay focused. EVERY DAY.  It has to come 3rd. Family, work, running, and believe me I wish I could make it number 2.  I have to be constantly mindful of my nutrition and every habit i do.  This is the only way.  I have a newfound determination and im not gonna let it slip thru my fingers any more.  I want this in the sweet spot every day.  And it will get easier. And I will do it.  I will prove to myself that i can do this.

My last day off for awhile. (from work I mean).  French Creek mid morning run.  Did the loop only once and felt like crap again :(  I dont know what the problem is.  Maybe ive just temporarily lost my groove.. But im determined to get it back.  Gonna do another mid morning run tomorrow.  Days Dam hopefully.  It hasnt been my breathing, its been my legs feeling all lactic acidy, and i know its not really that but i cant remember the correct chemical that in fact causes the pain.  Just gotta stick with the health food diet, and stay determined.

Finally felt a little stronger today!  Started out with legs of lead again.  Started attributing it to the jalepenos i ate last night.  Gradually they started to stretch  out however, and I didnt feel like death upon finishing. Even picked up the pace for a few strides.  Need to remain determined. Need to keep running at the constant forefront of my mind.  I am going to live and breathe running, read about it every chance i get for motivation, be mindful of every nutritional choice i make, and race that half marathon in january.  Who knows how long I have to be healthy in this lifetime, and if not now, when?  PS - no more jalepenos, they always f me up.
